Perú
Announcement:
I am now trying to schedule a tour of Peru to take place at some point between June 1st and August 1st 2012. The tour will last about 3 weeks. It will begin in Lima, Peru. I am considering various localities, but likely we will bird:
- Lomas de Lachay
- Pantano de Villa
- Lago Junín
- Bosque de Zárate
- El Valle Sagrado (near Machu Picchu)
- Machu Picchu
- And perhaps and area near Puerto Maldonado.
I plan on also visiting el Parque Nacional Huscarán, and the Jungle beyond Iquitos.
Once finished, this page will display information about two point five Peruvian tours.
I fell in love with Perú in 2009, when I went to visit, in passing to Chile, and decided to stay. I lived in that country for 10 months. Perú is most definitely a land of contrasts, ecologically and socially. More than any other place I have ever lived or visited, it provokes the imagination and inspires happiness and ire at the same time.
This summer I will formalize two Peruvian “excursions.”
- The first will have us bird the pacific coast for a few days, then take us to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. 7 days of birding ought to be enough to see enough wonders to become addicted. Next we will jump to Lake Titicaca, get to see its endemic Grebe, among many other birds. We will make our way home through the barren desert south of Arequipa, stopping off at an oasis or two, finally turning north along the coast. We will spend a couple of days in Paracas, doing the island excursion and spending some time relaxing on the beach. Eventually we will get back to Lima and send you home.
- The second tour immediately takes into the central highlands, to Lake Junín where we should see most of the Andean specialties. Then, we will wind our way down to (progressively shedding more and more clothes) Pucallpa where we will do some good birding. Here we will be presented with a choice: to fly to Iquitos in about 1.5 hours, or to take a 3 day boat, stopping off at La Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samina. Eventually we will get to Iquitos and make our way to an nearby lodge. Once done in Iquitos, an airplane will take us back to Lima in a jiffy. The fast option makes for a 20 day tour, maybe a little less, while the long option makes for 30+ days. The fast option may cost as much as $3,000 the long one maybe $3,500. Better numbers and data will come this summer.
